1 in 4 people will experience a mental illness, meaning most people know, or love, someone who is suffering with a mental illness. Despite this, mental illnesses aren't talked about much and many still see the issue as a taboo subject. Many people who don't understand mental illnesses view them as weaknesses and that someone who is suffering are somehow weaker than them or incapable of making proper decisions, looking after themselves and living a normal life. No wonder 1 in 3 people who suffer with a mental illness suffer in silence!
I am the 1 in 4 but I do not suffer in silence. I aim to be as open as I can with this blog, The only way to get rid of the stigma surrounding mental illnesses is to be open. I suffer from Generalised Anxiety Disorder and Depression. Despite this, I still manage to study. People with mental illnesses are still people and they can struggle on. You probably know loads of people who are currently or have a history of suffering with a mental illness but just don't realise. Think of the number of people who work for your company, sit in your lectures or have children at the same school. That's a lot of sufferers.
