Madly Seeking Sanity is a book by Lola Jane. It describes her experience with bipolar disorder and her life before her breakdown.
It is split into two parts. Part one is about her life before her breakdown while part two documents her life post-breakdown, being diagnosed with bipolar disorder and learning to live with her condition.
Part one does not go in chronological order, instead it is broken into different sections, ie work and family. This is a good idea as it shows how every aspect in Lola's life contributed to her breakdown. I could relate to many parts of Lola's story, mainly her relationship with some family members and her outlook on life.
I loved reading about how supportive her friends were for her. It made me hope that other people struggling with mental health problems had the same support, even though I know they don't.
As part one nears an end, you can clearly see the decline into breakdown as Lola gets closer to the event.
Part two is from diaries Lola kept when in psychiatric hospitals and living life post-breakdown. You got to see the first hand experience of how she struggled to come to terms with things.
I really felt for Lola and was with her in the highs and lows. The experience she had in a private psychiatric hospital was eye-opening. I had never really thought what it was like in a psychiatric hospital. I particularly felt for Lola when she was battling her undiagnosed eating disorder while still in hospital and when she left the hospital.
Overall, I loved the book. I had it finished in two days because I could not put it down. It was wonderfully open and showed a true experience of living with a mental illness.
